Privacy Policy

Terrance is a personal assistant you interact with via SMS. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and what controls you have.

1. Information We Collect

• Phone number — used to identify you and send replies.
• Message content — the text of SMS messages you send to Terrance, used solely to fulfill your request.
• Google account data — calendar events, tasks, and the ability to send email, accessed only when you authorize Terrance via Google OAuth and only to carry out actions you explicitly request.
• Personal notes — text you explicitly ask Terrance to remember (e.g., "remember that…"). Notes are stored in our database and retrieved only to answer your recall requests. Notes may contain personal information at your discretion; see Section 5 for retention details.
• Contact nicknames — names and email addresses you save (e.g., "my wife → jane@example.com") so Terrance can resolve them in future requests. Stored in our database and used only to fulfill your requests.
• Standing instructions — preferences you set to customize Terrance's behavior (e.g., "always add a Zoom link to meetings"). Stored in your account profile.

2. How We Use Your Information

• To execute the actions you request (creating calendar events, sending emails, managing tasks).
• To send you SMS replies and your daily morning briefing if enabled.
• To improve reliability — logs may be retained for up to 30 days for debugging, then deleted.

We do not sell, share, or use your data for advertising. We do not build profiles or track behavior beyond what is necessary to respond to your requests.

3. Google API Data

Terrance's use of Google APIs (Calendar, Gmail, Tasks) complies with the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Specifically:

• We access Google data only to perform actions you explicitly request via SMS.
• We do not store your Google data beyond completing your request.
• We do not transfer your Google data to third parties except as necessary to fulfill your request (e.g., Twilio for SMS delivery).
• We do not use Google data for advertising or any purpose unrelated to the service.

4. Third-Party Services

The following third-party providers process your data as part of delivering the service:

• Anthropic — AI processing. The text of your SMS messages, and when you ask Terrance to read your email, the sender name and subject line of retrieved emails, are sent to Anthropic's Claude API to determine what action to take. This data is governed by Anthropic's Privacy Policy. Terrance is not intended for use cases involving protected health information (PHI) or other regulated sensitive data, and you should not use Terrance to process such information.
• Twilio — SMS delivery. Your phone number and the text of SMS messages sent to and from Terrance pass through Twilio's infrastructure. See Twilio's Privacy Policy.
• Stripe — Payment processing. Your payment card details and billing information are handled entirely by Stripe and are never stored on Terrance's servers. See Stripe's Privacy Policy.
• Google — Calendar, Gmail, and Tasks APIs. Data accessed through Google APIs is governed by Google's Privacy Policy.

5. Data Retention

Conversation history (the text of SMS exchanges between you and Terrance) is automatically deleted after 90 days. Personal notes and contact nicknames are retained until you delete them by asking Terrance (e.g., "forget that note about…" or "delete contact: my wife") or until you request account deletion. Standing instructions are retained as part of your account profile until you clear them. Google OAuth tokens are stored securely and used only to authenticate on your behalf. You can revoke access at any time. Server logs may be retained for up to 30 days for debugging purposes.

6. Your Rights and Controls

• Revoke Google access — Visit myaccount.google.com/permissions at any time to remove Terrance's access to your Google account.
• Delete your account — Email us at help@terrance.app to request deletion of your account and any associated data.
• Data requests — You may request a copy of your data by emailing us at the address above.

7. Security

We use industry-standard practices to protect your data, including encrypted storage of credentials and HTTPS for all communications. No system is perfectly secure, and we encourage you to revoke access if you believe your account has been compromised.

8. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy as the service evolves. Significant changes will be communicated via SMS. Continued use of Terrance after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
